New videos complete explainer series on EU AI regulation

The final instalments of the video series on the EU Artificial Intelligence Act are now available. These explainers provide accessible insights into how the legislation affects health research, AI-driven tools, and digital health innovation.

The series is designed to support researchers, developers, and patient communities in navigating the implications of the AI Act. All episodes are available in both English and French, with contributions from specialists in regulatory science, ethics, and digital health.

Topics covered in the final videos:

  • Episode 6: Mapping Responsibilities: Operators in the AI Value Chain

Focuses on the essential roles and compliance obligations of operators within the AI landscape, including key considerations in contractual relationships within the AI value chain.

  • Episode 7: AI Regulatory Sandboxes: Where AI Learns to Play by the Rules

Outlines how the AI Act supports innovation by allowing providers to test AI systems in supervised environments, with specific provisions for legal safeguards and support for small enterprises.

  • Episode 8: Demystifying Conformity Assessment Procedures

Explains the two types of conformity assessments for high-risk AI systems: internal controls by the provider and external reviews by notified bodies. Outlines when each applies, the role of harmonised standards, and what happens in urgent cases or when modifications are made after deployment.

  • Episode 9: Who's Watching Over and How? A Dive Into Enforcement and Sanctions

Describes the enforcement structure of the AI Act, including the roles of the AI Office, AI Board, national authorities and notified bodies. Outlines the range of sanctions that can be imposed for non-compliance, with fines reaching up to 35 million euros or 7 percent of global turnover.

  • Episode 10: In Annex Does not Mean Optional

Details the essential Annexes of the AI Act, which are crucial for its practical implementation. Explains which Annexes may be modified by the Commission to ensure the AI Act remains future proof.

  • Episode 11: In the End: Critical Takeaways

Recaps the series by offering one positive and one negative feature for each of the previous topics, providing a balanced and reflective conclusion.
